Overview
User Interests let your app users choose the topics they care about so the app can tailor their experience to them.
- App users select their interests on the Interest Screen, which can be shown during onboarding and is also available in the app so users can update their choices at any time
- A My Interests button can be added to the Schedule and to any list screen (for example performers, exhibitors or locations), so users can quickly filter content based on their selected interests
- Users discover the artists, exhibitors and activities that match what they are interested in, which drives engagement and discoverability
- You can target specific widgets or push notifications to users based on the interests they selected
Availability: User Interests is included with the Personalization Add-on Pack and with all Premium and Enterprise Packs. To get the feature enabled on your project, reach out to your Implementation Manager, Account Manager or Strategic Client Success Manager.
Things to Know
- Interest selections are anonymous and are not tied to a user's personal information (such as name or email)
- When users return to the Interest Screen, they will see the interests they previously selected and can update them
- Users are added to an Audience Segment for each interest they select, so you can see how many users chose each interest under Communicate > Audience segments
- If you use Leap Conventions, you can align your interest options with the tags set up in your Conventions admin so user preferences match your tagged content
- User Interests is not currently integrated with Leap Activations

Setting Up User Interests in the CMS
Once your Leap team has enabled User Interests on your project, you can set it up in the CMS in a few steps.
1. Show the Interest Screen During Onboarding (Optional)
- Go to App Layout > Onboarding
- Turn on the Attendee interests screen to show it to users during onboarding
- It is turned off by default
Note: Onboarding needs to be finalized before your app is published to the stores, as it cannot be edited afterwards.

2. Create Your Interest Groups and Link Tags
- Go to Tags & Filtering > Attendee Interest Screen
- Update the Screen Title and Screen Subtitle (default text is provided to start)
- Under Interest Groups, add the interests users will be able to choose from
- Reorder the interest groups to control the order they are displayed in
- You can add up to 10 interest groups
- Users can select as many interests as they like (a few, all or none)
- Link your existing tags to each Interest Group. This is what allows the Schedule and list screens to filter and show the right content
- For example, for a Cosplay interest group, select the Activity Tags that relate to Cosplay

3. Add Interests to Your App Screens
- Go to the app screen you want to personalize (for example Schedule, Activities or Artists)
- Under My Interest Options, you will find two toggles:
- Enable My Interest Filtering Button for This Screen: shows the My Interests button so users can switch between the full list and the list filtered by their interests
- Toggle My Interest View Automatically if Feature is Used: shows the screen pre-filtered by the user's interests by default
-
Tip: the pre-filtered option works well with a "View your recommended schedule" widget on your home screen that links to a Schedule filtered by each user's interests (for example, only Cosplay and Anime activities)
- If you don't want users to be able to switch back to the full Schedule, turn off Enable My Interest Filtering Button for This Screen

4. Create Audience Segments Based on Your Interest Groups
- Go to Communicate > Audience segments
- Create a segment and name it after one of your interest groups (for example, for an interest group called "Comic", create a segment called "Comic Interest")
- In the Criteria section, select Attendee Interests, then in the Values field select the matching Interest Group
- You can then use this segment to target widgets and push notifications. For more on how segments work, see [link: Mobile Audience Segments article]

FAQ
Q: How is this different from personalization through Leap Activations registration?
A: User Interests is designed for anonymous app users, so their selections are not tied to any personal information such as name or email. Personalization through Activations registration or surveys is tied to identified attendees and can be exported.
Q: Can I see how many users selected each interest?
A: Yes. Create an Audience Segment for each interest group to see how many users selected it. Interest reporting in the Stats section is planned for a future release.
Q: If I also use Leap Activations, can interests be tied to identified users?
A: Not at this time, but this may be improved in a future phase.
Q: How do I get User Interests enabled?
A: Reach out to your Implementation Manager, Account Manager or Strategic Client Success Manager to get the feature enabled on your project. Once it is on, you can set up your interest groups and choose which tags are linked to each one.
Q: Can a single interest group be linked to multiple tags?
A: Yes. You can link multiple tags, from multiple tag categories, to a single interest group.
Q: What can I control on the user-facing screens?
A: You choose which interest groups are shown to users and the title and subtitle at the top of the selection screen.
